Petrova was born in Cheboksary, Chuvash ASSR, to parents Valery Petrov and Tatyana Petrova. She started attending the Cheboksary School of Modeling when she was fourteen years old, and she subsequently started competing in pageants.
At the Miss Russia 1996 pageant, which was held in Veliky Novgorod, Petrova competed on behalf of the city of Cheboksary. At the age of barely sixteen, she went on to win the competition. She also won the title of Miss Model International during her reign. She crowned Yelena Rogozhina as Miss Russia when her tenure as the titleholder came to an end.
Petrova later turned down a contract offer from Ford Models because they wanted her to reduce weight, learn English, and cut her hair short. Petrova later competed as a representative of Russia in the Miss Universe 1999 pageant, however, she was unplaced.
Two days before turning 20 years old, Petrova was killed shot in the head outside of her Cheboksary residence on September 16, 2000. Konstantin Chuvilin, her boyfriend, and Radik Akhmetov, a friend of his, both perished in the assault. It was assumed that Chuvilin, a mafia leader, was the intended victim of the attack and Petrova was only a witness. She also had no children and never got married.
